Citronella Decor Your Backyard Needs This Summer
As summer approaches, we prepare our patios, backyards, & balconies for sunset happy hours & endless nights of entertaining. We bring out the comfy furniture, potted plants, colorful rugs, and string lights for perfect evenings under the stars. But there is one minor issue that most people forget about when it comes to outdoor entertaining: the bugs.
With summer comes bugs. Fortunately, there is a way to win the bug battle without cutting the party short or making everyone use electric mosquito swatters for utensils. The answer is Citronella; ever heard of it?
Citronella is a natural insect and animal repellent.
According to Less Mosquito, “The oil works by preventing the mosquitoes (or other biting/stinging insects) from sensing the kairomones of the individual wearing the citronella-containing product. Kairomones interact with insects like mosquitoes in a similar way to how humans are attracted to each other’s pheromones, however, some insects can sense kairomones from substantial distances, for example a female mosquito can detect kairomones from up to a kilometre away” and “by masking your kairomones with a product such as Citronella, you’re effectively ‘invisible’ and can sneak past mosquitoes without being ‘eaten alive’ (lessmosquito.com).
Citronella can be made into candles, diffusers, incense, and lamps because it is an essential oil taken from the Lemongrass plant. You can also opt for the actual plant itself if that’s something that may interest you.
I personally love the smell of Citronella. It’s a sweet scent that reminds me of my childhood in the best way possible, and it also reminds me that the bugs are not welcomed.
