Your house smell is one of the first things people notice when they step into your home. Ideally, it’d be nice to have a home with no smell at all. However, between your pets, children, foods you eat, and the things you do every day, it’s basically impossible to avoid aromas from seeping in. That being said, there are many ways you can freshen up your home scent and here’s how:
1. Know Your Space
Start by testing the humidity in each room with a hygrometer. If the room has a humidity level above 60 percent, then I would recommend looking into a dehumidifier.
Next, what is the climate like where you live? If you live in a humid place, try not to invest in wall to wall rugs. The reason for this is because the wall to wall carpeting actually traps moisture. Some solutions to adding moisture in the rooms that need it are by adding moisture absorbing crystals or stones.
Lastly, beware of your towels, sponges and other objects that contain moisture. You’ll want to switch these out quite frequently (around every week or two) so that aromas don’t linger.
2. Clean Your Garbage Disposal
If you notice an unusual smell coming from your kitchen, it’s most likely your garbage disposal. So, let’s get to cleaning… One way you can clean your garbage disposal is by grabbing a bottle of lemon dish soap and spraying some down the disposal. Make sure the waters running, and then turn on the disposal. Another way to clean the disposal is by collecting lemon and orange peels, putting them in an ice tray with water, and then freezing them. Once frozen, run them through your disposal. The peels will add a nice scent and the ice cubes will clean the disposal blades.
3. Drizzle Baking Soda onto Your Carpets/Rugs
Carpets and rugs absorb scents like no other. While switching out your carpets and rugs somewhat regularly would do a lot for the aromas in your home, it’s just not ideal or cheap. Therefore, my advice to you is to sprinkle baking soda onto your carpets/rugs. It’s cheap and has deodorizing ingredients. Sprinkle it all over any rug or carpet, especially your bigger rugs and carpets. Let the baking soda sit anywhere from a half hour up to a couple hours and then vacuum your rugs/carpets the way you normally would.
4. Drizzle Baking Soda in Your Trash Can
It’s no surprise that a horrible odor is coming from the place that accumulates trash. However, there is a solution and it’s to drizzle baking soda in the trash can, under the can’s liner. I would then disinfect the trash can with any kind of disinfecting spray for a clean finish.
5. Grab Your Fresh Fruits and Herbs and Turn on The Stove
Grab a pan, put some water in it, and turn on the stove. Next add any fresh herbs or fruits you have and place them in the pan. Let it simmer. The heat will spread the scent throughout your home.
6. Candles / Incense
This one’s an obvious one and you’re probably wondering why it took me so long to mention it. Candles do a great job at masking a smell temporarily, but if you place them strategically, they can do much more than that. For example, placing a votive candle in a cup of coffee beans without lighting it will go a long way for your home, smell wise. I would recommend going to a room or closet where something smells funny, placing a couple candles in there, and seeing what it does. I’ve done several candle posts in case you need recs and have attached them here, and here. Incense are your next and stronger alternative. They burn for about an hour or so and are another great way to add a strong scent to any room.
7. Bring in the Nature
Plants are incredible way to purify the air in your home, so bring in as many as you can. On top of purifying your air, they bring in delicious, natural aromas. I’ve written a post on plants in case you need help deciding which one to buy. I’ve attached it here for your convenience. Â
8. Air Fresheners for your Air Vents
Adding plug in air fresheners’s will make the air that blows out smell like that particular scent. You have various options when it comes to picking a scent. It’s a great, easy, and quick way to freshen the smell in every room. Â
9. Essential Oil Diffusers
